Home Ritual: Personal Fire Ceremony How-To

“Fire allows for rapid transformation. It provides the avenue to let go of the old story and drama, to transform, to renew, and to be reborn. Through fire ceremony, you honor your lessons and old belief structures by placing them in the fire and turning them over to Spirit. By releasing these old patterns and beliefs into the fire, you heal deeply at the level of the soul without having to experience them at the literal and physical levels.”

-Four Winds Society

At the time of the full moon the energy is at its highest and what has been laying in the shadows has the potential to be illuminated. It is a great time to consider what you want to let go of in yourself and in your life because after that, for the next 14 days, the energy begins to decrease as the moon “lets go” of her light. When you work with the flow of nature, rather than against it, there is more power  available to you. In a sense, the spirits of nature, the gods & goddesses of the natural world & the cosmos are on your side.

You can create your own personal fire ceremony to expedite the releasing process as the energy of the element of fire lends itself to transformation. It can be as quick and easy as you want it to be or long and elaborate. All you need are a few materials:

  • Candle
  • Tweezers
  • Small piece of scrap paper
  • Optional: Incense, sage, or palo santo and/or objects of personal power or beauty i.e. crystals, shells, bits of nature, statues of gods/goddesses or animals

Find a quiet place in your home to set up the candle and any other objects you may want to use for your ceremony. Light the candle. It can be as simple as that or you could burn sage, say a prayer, sing a song, chant, recite a poem, or ask for help from ancestors/angels/guides/goddesses, gods etc to call in sacred space. It’s most important to use your intuition and have fun creating your sacred space. Begin to sit with what you want to let go of. These are just examples, but you may consider:

  • What in your life is not working?
  • Where do you feel stuck?
  • Do you have anger, resentment or attachments to certain people that are sucking your energy?
  • Are there self-limiting beliefs, feelings of doubt, shame or blame that are blocking you?

Once you consider what you want to let go, sit with what you want instead. What do you want to create or manifest in your life? What are your dreams? It can be anything on a physical, emotional, mental, energetic or spiritual level as long as it is from the heart and will serve your soul’s growth: a car, a partner, financial abundance, certain qualities that will help you in your job or to deal with a person, parts of yourself that need to be healed are all ideas. You can ask for support & clarity around tough life issues or to see something you have not yet been able to see.

Once it is clear to you what you want to let go of and what you want to call in, rip up pea-size pieces of paper for each thing plus one extra piece for gratitude. Start with want you want to let go of. Pick up one of the pieces of paper with the tweezers, hold it in front of your mouth and use your breath to blow the thing you want to let go of into the paper. Your breath transfers the energy of the thing into the paper. Then place the paper in the flame. Do the same with the rest of the things you want to let go. Then use one piece of paper to blow in an offering of gratitude to Spirit, placing it in the flame: “thank you, thank you, thank you” or any other words you feel called to say. Then do the same thing with the things you want to call in. After that, your fire ceremony is complete.

A few key points to remember:

  • Try to keep your attention focused in your heart space throughout the ceremony.
  • The clearer you are with your language, the better Spirit can serve you.
  • However, if there is a certain feeling you want to release that you do not have language for you can still put it in the fire.
  • Never ask for something for somebody else unless you have their permission.
  • Release all expectations.
  • Start paying more attention, Meghan’s teacher always says you never know how fast Spirit will act.
  • Be careful what you wish for 🙂

Fire ceremonies are traditionally done on full moons, but feel free to do one whenever you feel called. You can do one whenever you are not feeling well physically, emotionally, mentally or energetically or when you feel like there is something you need from Spirit.
