IN LAK’ECH YOGA RETREAT

Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

October 29 – November 6, 2016

Overview

In Guatemala, the Mayan people greet each other by saying “In Lak’ech” which means “I am another you, you are another me”. This reminds us that what we see on the outside is also inside us. Held at 5,000 feet in the highlands of Western Guatemala and surrounded by volcanoes, Lake Atitlan is the deepest lake in Central America. This unique and striking setting creates a powerful container for us to experience and harness the energy of nature that is alive within us.

Known as the Land of Eternal Spring, the hills are full of flowers, fruit trees, and farm lands where corn, sugar cane, coffee and more are cultivated. In the Mayan villages that circle the shores, the people live not so differently than their ancestors a thousand years ago. Each town around the Lake holds its own unique energy and the Mayans are adorned in colorful traditional dress. They embrace the steady pace of nature and the sweetness of their spirit pervades the air. It seems fitting that the Tzutujil Mayan word for “I feel happy” is literally translated as “honey in my heart”. This honey can be tasted even during Day of the Dead, a festival falling on November 1st/2nd in which those passed are honored.

Come with us to this land of Eternal Spring to help ease your transition into fall. Guided by the energy of Day of the Dead, this retreat creates a space for deep release, honoring what has passed, and for the lessons brought to the light. Be inspired by the people of the Lake and fill yourself up with the sweetness and simplicity of life here. Through the healing tools of yoga, ritual, clean food, massage, sacred plants, and supportive circles, the Megs hold space for an experience that will change your life. And don’t forget that we always include a touch of adventure into the mix. Be ready to safely explore your edges and transform yourself in the process!

A Typical Day:

Rise with the sun, and as you brush your teeth you’ll enjoy the vibrant colors of the sky that awaken the tranquil Lake from her deep slumber. Make your way through the jungle paths of Isla Verde down to the outdoor yoga space. Join Meg for an invigorating Hatha Flow class that will help you to stoke your inner fire, complete with views of the Lake’s volcanoes to inspire that fire to burn even brighter. After yoga, there will be time for contemplation, journaling, or meditation.

Breakfast follows with a simple, delicious buffet of fresh fruit, grains, and protein…..and the freshest cup of coffee you’ll ever have! The coffee man, John, selects the finest beans from farms around the Lake and roasts them the day before he delivers them to Isla Verde.

On some days there will be an optional group activity (an adventure on the Lake, a guided hike, shopping and exploring the Lake’s unique towns, and so much more!) or you’re free to RELAX. Isla Verde offers so many hidden gems to unplug and tune in to yourself. Sun on the beautiful deck that overlooks the Lake, swing in a hammock all day, read a book, or commune with the flowers and birds.

Before dinner, join Meghan in the cozy, candle-lit, yoga hut that has 180 degree windows that lend to the Yin practice of comfort, while still feeling connected to the land around you. Some days you’ll even hear the laughter of the women making dinner in the kitchen. Sink into yin poses as the sun sinks into the horizon, and greet the waxing crescent moon after savasana.

Accommodations:

Hotel Isla Verde: Isla Verde means “green island” and to us, it means home. This is truly Aluna’s home base in Guatemala and we wouldn’t think of staying anywhere else! The eco-hotel is beautiful and comfortable. Every person on staff is kind and ready to help out with any of your needs. The tasteful cabins are set on the hillside to allow for stunning views of the area, so be ready to hike up a few sets of steps to get back to your room each night! Words can’t describe the magic this little hotel brings to the lake so you’ll just have to come and see for yourself!

Cuisine:

Be nourished by the exquisite food of Isla Verde’s Slow Food Cafe. All day long, the sound of music and laughter emanates from the restaurant kitchen as the delightful staff mindfully prepares the meals. Three vegetarian meals a day are served with the option to add chicken on certain days.
